How to Make Technology a Positive Influence on Your Kids
We all know that technology presents amazing opportunities for all of society, including our children. However, the scientific evidence is also clear that too much screen time can be damaging to our children. We must strive to strike a balance between allowing our kids the chance to use tech and making sure they don’t spend too much time with it. Here is some advice on how to find that balance.
Have a Conversation with Them
Kids are more astute than adults sometimes give them credit for. To that end, have an honest and open conversation with your kids about the various positives and negatives that come with technology and screen time. Make sure they know that there are dangers on the internet, and some content and conversations which they are not yet ready for. At the same time, be positive, and let them know about all of the good things which they can find with responsible screen time. Furthermore, according to Beehive Broadband, you should keep up with what your kids are doing online by having them show you what they are watching and playing. This enables you to monitor what they are doing and warn them about potential dangers.
Encourage Positive Behavior
You should use your phone in a manner that is appropriate and helps to positively influence your life. For example, show your kids the incredible educational value of your phones by using it to look up information, instructional videos or otherwise enhance your lives beyond games or YouTube videos. Additionally, model appropriate behavior for your kids. You can do this by limiting the time you spend on your phone, and making sure that you put your phone away when appropriate, like at mealtimes or while driving.
According to Bright Horizons, every child and teenager needs limits, and screen guidelines can be healthy for a variety of reasons. The time limits should shift, of course, depending on the age of the child in question. Furthermore, as adults, it’s up to us to monitor the screen time content that our kids consume. Everything that they are watching or playing doesn’t have to have an educational value, but at a minimum, it should be age appropriate. Many apps have parental controls, and you should explore those functions.
Technology can be a double-edged sword. If used appropriately, it can be amazing, but if used inappropriately, it can cause significant damage to our children. Make sure that you monitor their activities and teach them about safe and appropriate technological use.
